What Is Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Supplement, also known as Medigap, is a private health insurance policy designed to cover the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. These policies help reduce the financial burden of healthcare services by covering costs that could otherwise add up quickly, especially for those with frequent medical needs. Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government and are labeled with letters (A through N), each offering a different level of coverage, from basic benefits to more comprehensive options. However, Medigap does not cover prescription drugs, so beneficiaries often pair it with a standalone Part D plan for medication coverage.

Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, which are offered by private insurers as an alternative to Original Medicare, Medigap plans work alongside Original Medicare, allowing beneficiaries to use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. Medigap plans typically have higher monthly premiums compared to Medicare Advantage, but they offer more predictable costs with fewer out-of-pocket expenses. The premiums for Medigap plans vary based on factors such as the insurer, location, and plan choice, but once enrolled, beneficiaries are generally protected from excessive out-of-pocket healthcare costs due to the plan’s cost-sharing coverage.

Understanding Medicare Supplement

  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap) helps pay for out-of-pocket expenses that Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

  • Medigap plans are designed to work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B), allowing you to keep your Medicare benefits while reducing additional healthcare costs.

  • Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, with 10 plan options (A through N) offering varying levels of coverage, but the coverage is the same no matter which insurer offers the plan.

  • Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage, so beneficiaries typically need a separate Part D plan for medication coverage.

Different Types of Medicare Supplement Plans

Plan F

Medicare Supplement Plan F is the most comprehensive Medigap plan, covering all out-of-pocket costs left by Original Medicare, including Part A and Part B deductibles, coinsurance, and excess charges. However, it is only available to beneficiaries who became eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.

Plan G

Medicare Supplement Plan G is one of the most comprehensive Medigap plans, covering nearly all out-of-pocket costs left by Original Medicare, including Part A deductibles, coinsurance, and excess charges, but excluding the Part B deductible, which is $240.

Plan N

Medicare Supplement Plan N offers comprehensive coverage for most out-of-pocket costs, including Part A deductibles and coinsurance, but requires beneficiaries to pay small copayments for doctor visits and emergency room visits. It does not cover Part B excess charges, making it a cost-effective choice for those who don’t frequently see providers that charge above Medicare-approved amounts.

Plan K

Medicare Supplement Plan K provides partial coverage for many out-of-pocket costs, such as 50% of Part B coinsurance, Part A deductibles, and hospice care coinsurance, making it a more affordable option with lower premiums. However, it includes an annual out-of-pocket limit ($6,940 in 2024), after which it covers 100% of covered services for the remainder of the year.

Plan C

Medicare Supplement Plan C offers comprehensive coverage, including all Part A and Part B deductibles, coinsurance, and excess charges, making it one of the most complete options for reducing out-of-pocket healthcare costs. However, it is only available to those who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020.

Plan L

Medicare Supplement Plan L provides partial coverage for out-of-pocket costs, covering 75% of most expenses like Part A coinsurance, Part B coinsurance, and the Part A deductible. It also includes an annual out-of-pocket limit ($3,870 in 2024), after which it covers 100% of covered services for the remainder of the year.
